CBD for Athletes FAQ

Our products don’t just contain CBD. Our formulations are uniquely paired with complementary ingredients that help enhance and support CBD.

Cannabidiol (CBD) can be a great addition to your current exercise routine. CBD can promote restful sleep, which is not only very important to athletic recovery, but also indirectly supports improved energy during the day. Read more about how it works below!

Cannabidiol (CBD) is celebrated by many for its myriad effects, with CBD athletic recovery leading the way. This phytocannabinoid from hemp is being explored for its effect on the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which keeps your body in balance from head to toe. That’s because CBD influences the receptors that make up your ECS, engaging in a ripple effect that modulates a number of processes in your body that affect workout recovery.

Whatever your chosen sport or activity, Blitz is here to help every step along the way. Here’s some of the most frequently asked questions about CBD for athletes that can help guide you as you start your CBD journey.

CBD and muscle recovery

Among its many properties, CBD is celebrated for its calming properties. After an intense match, a high-intensity workout, or even just a good long walk, your muscles are definitely feeling the burn. A topical CBD muscle rub penetrates your skin and interacts with the endocannabinoid receptors found in your muscles, helping legs, glutes, arms, and more spring back into action without soreness. You can also take a CBD product orally, which introduces the phytocannabinoid into your bloodstream.

CBD and sleep

Any athlete knows that sleep is vital to recovery. According to the Sleep Foundation, REM sleep is key to your body’s recovery, both physically and mentally. The less quality sleep you get, the fewer REM cycles your body and brain undergo — and your athletic performance can suffer as a result.

CBD impacts sleep in a number of ways, including:

  • Influencing hormone levels in your body that promote sleep
  • Interacting with receptors in your body that have an effect on the sleep/wake cycle
  • Relieve discomfort and pain that can keep you from sleeping
  • Help you unwind and relax as you prepare to go to sleep

While the research into CBD and sleep is still ongoing, what we know is promising. In one 2019 study, two out of three adults reported improved sleep after taking CBD for one month, and a bit more than half reported improved sleep for two months.

CBD can be used for sleep in one of two ways: to help you fall asleep and to help you stay asleep. For the latter, choose a CBD product that spends several hours in your digestive system, such as CBD gummies, CBD oral sprays, or CBD capsules.

CBD for energy

Sleep and energy go hand in hand. Without one, you can’t have the other. And without energy, you have no fuel to tap into to meet those PRs or beat the opposing team. Here’s how CBD impacts your energy levels:

  • CBD helps your body and mind unwind for better sleep, therefore impacting your energy levels
  • CBD may help balance dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain, which play a significant role in the sleep-wake cycle

CBD for anxiety

Anxiety’s impact can be devastating, even in sports. Pre-game jitters? Nerves before a match? CBD can help with that, putting your mind at ease so you can shift your energy to getting into the zone. Not to mention, CBD can help you relax, easing your mind as you prepare to go to sleep. Since we know the key to proper recovery is restful sleep, CBD pulls double the punches here.

Is CBD good for working out?

Yes! You don’t need to be a pro athlete to give CBD a try. CBD is a great option to enhance workout recovery, no matter what your activity level or your sport of choice.

CBD before a workout: is that a good idea?

This depends on your goals! If you find that you struggle with stiff joints or soreness after a workout, you might find that taking CBD beforehand eases those feelings. Aim for a product that takes longer to kick in so you can experience its effects after your workout, game, or match is over.

Are athletes allowed to use CBD in 2020?

For decades, many professional leagues across all sports did not allow the use of CBD. In 2018, the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from its list of prohibited substances. (It’s important to note that only CBD was removed from WADA’s list – no other natural or synthetic phytocannabinoid is OK.)

As of 2020, the following leagues allow for use of CBD:

  • Major League Baseball (MLB)
  • Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)
  • National Hockey League (NHL)

As of 2020, the following leagues do not allow use of CBD:

  • National Football League (NFL)
  • National Basketball Association (NBA)
  • National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)

There’s a significant and growing movement of retired and current pro athletes calling for leagues to allow the use of CBD and other phytocannabinoids in their leagues. Blitz CBD CEO Ruben Lindo is a retired pro athlete and a member of Athletes for Care, one of the largest and most vocal groups advocating for use of CBD and other phytocannabinoids in professional sports.

What has the World Health Organization said about CBD?

The World Health Organization famously released a paper in 2018 which declared CBD safe for use.

Should I take CBD oil before or after a workout?

Just like taking CBD before a workout, this depends on your goals. If you’re looking into CBD to support healthy sleep or calm muscles, it may be best to use CBD after your workout. Like we mentioned earlier, if you want to try to nip post-workout recovery in the bud before you even hit the gym, taking CBD before a workout may be a good idea.

How much CBD should I take before or after a workout?

The amount of CBD you should take changes from person to person. Everyone has their own tolerance and individual experience with CBD, and it may affect everyone differently. That’s the long way of saying that there’s no single tried-and-true amount for every person out there.

Start with a small amount of CBD product and work your way up. Try around 5mg. Wait around 1 hour and then evaluate how you feel. If you think you need more, take another 5mg. Eventually, you’ll build up a tolerance and may need to take more to experience CBD’s effects.

How long does CBD take to work?

Each type of CBD makes its way through your system in a different way. The method you choose is directly related to how long it takes the CBD to take effect. Refer to our quick guide for more information:

  • CBD tinctures
    • Time to take effect: Approximately 30 to 60 minutes
